In Hyderabad, amidst the controversy surrounding the Tirupati laddu due to allegations of adulteration, skilled artisans residing near Tirumala are preparing to apply for a geographical indication tag. These artisans have been crafting intricate wooden statues of Lord Balaji and other deities for over a century. Known as Madhavamala wood carvings, their creations include lifelike idols, dolls, toys, doors, windows, floral carvings, pooja mandapams, pillars, and furniture. Represented by the Sri Balaji Wood Carvings Mutually Aided Cooperative Society Limited, consisting of 510 artisans from 309 families, they will submit their application for a GI tag with the assistance of NABARD. This will mark the 20th GI application from Andhra Pradesh, as confirmed by GI expert Subhajit Saha, who will support the artisans in obtaining the designation along with NABARD.
